Four Hints That You Are In The Wrong Career
Being in a career that isn’t for you can bring many negative feelings to your life. You can start feeling depressed and stressed. In the long run, suffering these emotions can have physical effects on your body. But if you don’t know where to start, here are four signs that will tell you if you are in the wrong career.
You Feel Unfulfilled
One of the first signs that your career isn’t for you anymore is when you are feeling unfulfilled. What you are doing doesn’t excite you or make you feel anything at all. You feel bored and empty every day. In other words, you feel like your day to day activities don’t have any meaning.
Feeling like life doesn’t have meaning can mean you are depressed, and depending on how long you’ve felt that way, it can be tough to get out of that hole. If you feel like this, you should make a change as soon as possible. Try to find an activity that engages your mind and that makes you happy.
You can start by finding a new hobby, meeting other people with the same interests, joining activity groups like book clubs or running groups. Anything as long as you are doing something in your free time. If you don’t like it, it is ok, just change to another thing. Eventually, you will find something that you enjoy that can guide you into a new career.
The Profession Goes Against Your Values
Our values are what make us who we are and what helps us determine what is good or bad. If your profession goes against your values, you will find yourself in a conflict with your mind. You will probably feel like what you are doing is wrong and that you shouldn’t continue on that path.
For example, if you believe in climate change and do everything possible to reduce our effect on Earth, working for an oil company is against that. You will start feeling guilty or depressed because you aren’t working towards the thing you believe. Also, our values are part of who we are. Thus, when working in a profession that goes against them, you will start feeling like it doesn’t represent you.
Another part that is important, but not always essential, is to have a career that aligns with what you are passionate about. Not everyone indeed works in what their passion is. But if you can manage to find a career that aligns with what you are passionate about, you’ll probably be happier.
You Dream of Doing Something Else
When you spend every day wishing or dreaming you were doing something else, that is a sure hint that you are in the wrong career. Maybe you imagine yourself traveling the world, being an artist, or having your own business. Whatever it is, it means that what you are currently doing doesn’t make you happy, and it doesn’t challenge you.
No matter what it is, make the decision now to quit your job and start pursuing that other thing you dream of. For example, if you spend your days dreaming of traveling the world, you can change to tech careers that are perfect for working remotely. You could become a software engineer and build a remote career. Then, you will be able to work from anywhere and visit many countries.
If Money Wasn’t an Issue, What Would You Do?
Many times we choose our professions based on how much money we can make. But after many years, we realize that just money doesn’t always lead to happiness, especially if we are in a career that we hate. For example, tech professions like web design or data scientist are well-paid around the world. But if you don’t like math, algebra, or programming, you won’t be happy no matter how much money you make.
The same can be said for other careers with high salaries. Thus, think about what you would like to do if you hadn’t had to worry about money ever again. That will probably be an excellent guide on what you should do next.
In the end, it is more important to have a career that makes you happy than money or status. Thus, if you see any of these hints, you should make a run for it. If you feel unfulfilled, it goes against your values, or you dream of doing something else, then stop thinking about it and switch careers.
